LIGHTLIVE® Walking as a Luminous Act

The artwork is not the shoe. The artwork is the experience the shoe makes possible: a person walking in a darkened space, illuminating their path with their own presence. A performance in which the only light source is the act of being alive and in motion. A participatory installation in which each visitor discovers that their gait — irreproducible — specific to each individual's gait— produces a luminous signature that belongs only to them.

The body becomes its own lamp. The floor becomes a canvas. Each step, a brushstroke. This work emerges from thirty-seven years of sustained investigation into light as the primary structural material of visual art — not as illumination of subject matter, but as the subject itself.

The earlier body of work, The Intangible Infinite (2021–2025), comprises twenty digital paintings created during sustained periods of perceptual concentration using Apple Pencil on iPad. Those works require stillness: the viewer stops, looks, and in that arrested attention something perceptual shifts.

LIGHTLIVE® transposes the same investigation to the opposite pole of human experience: ordinary movement. Walking is the most habitual, most unconscious act of embodied life. The body speaks constantly through the rhythm, pressure and bilateral asymmetry of each step — but that language remains invisible to the person who produces it.

Artistic Investigation: The Origin of the Technology

ARTIST STATEMENT

Susana Mazzarino's practice investigates light as the primary structural material of visual art — not as illumination of subject matter, but as the subject itself. Over thirty-seven years and across multiple disciplines, this investigation has produced two parallel bodies of work that converge in a single technological project.

The first body of work — digital paintings created using Apple Pencil on iPad during sustained periods of perceptual concentration — investigates light as chromatic and luminous field. The compositions operate as perceptual objects: the viewer's prolonged attention does not decode the image but is altered by it. Twenty works from the series The Intangible Infinite (2021–2025) constitute the core of this practice, exhibited and collected across four continents.

The technological substrate of LIGHTLIVE® is under intellectual property protection and is not disclosed here. What this work presents is the artistic proposition: walking as a luminous, self-authored act.
